ETHIOPIA TRIPS:

TRIP DATES: (could vary 1-2 day on each side)

  • June 4th – 18th
  • June 21st – July 17th (one-month team)

Ethiopia is a naturally beautiful country with even more beautiful and graceful people.  With its incredible history and deep culture, the country and its people provide one of the most genuine and life changing cross-cultural experiences we’ve found.  Despite the images regularly seen from Ethiopia, most of the country is composed of fertile rolling hills dotted with village after village.  Due to the people’s hospitable nature, Ethiopia is a very inviting locale.   While poverty still holds a tight grip on the most of the country’s inhabitants, they are a joyful and loving people that have regularly welcomed our teams with open arms.

Our teams will focus on visiting two ministries that Mocha Club supports financially and through the visitation of these trips.  The first is a ministry that is rescuing women from the prostitution trade and rehabilitating them in various ways.  It also provides the women with basic job training to serve them once they are finished with the program. Our team will meet the current group of women and hear their stories of how this Mocha Club supported project has changed their lives.

In addition, our teams will visit a small town west of Addis Ababa called Ambo.  It’s here that our team will come alongside a church that is supporting the local population in a couple of ways.  One of these projects is a school of about 250 children. Mocha Club provided the funds for a new school building and our team will return there again this year to organize an English language program. As well, Mocha Club has initiated a second project through the church to support the local street boy community in providing funds for school fees. Our team will meet up with these boys and see how their lives are being changed as a result.

Team members will be directly involved in creating the ministry agenda for the trip.  Our ultimate desire is to serve the Ethiopian people in such a way that enables us to get to hear their story as well as share our own.  They each have an amazing story to tell, and we want to hear it.  This is where the life change happens on both sides.  So, that’ll look very different in many ways throughout the trip.  The team members will collaborate to develop certain aspects of the agenda.

KENYA TRIP:

TRIP DATES: (could vary 1-2 day on each side)

  • May 21st  – June 4th

TRIP DESCRIPTION:

Kenya is a country filled with welcoming and loving people. The moment you step off the plane, these people become family. The people you meet are open, warm and extremely grateful. The contrast of the big city of Nairobi to the small village of Kitui allows you to see and get of glimpse of Kenya.

There are three ministries that Mocha Club supports and that the team will visit. The first is Emmanuel Vocational School located in the slum of Kibera. This school opened in fall of 2009 and offers 5 main courses that individuals can sign up for such as catering, computer, beauty, electrical and fashion and design. These classes provide education for the many young adults who do not have the ability to attend high school or university. It allows them to find a skill that will help them find a job. The school sits in one of the largest slums in Africa and as many as 1 million live within a square mile. The team will get the opportunity to experience what their classes are like and may even get to teach a class.

The second ministry is the New Dawn Secondary School in Huruma, a slum outside one of the wealthiest parts of Nairobi. The 160-student school is made of large shipping containers and they are currently at full capacity. This school is a beacon of light to the 3000 people that live there. The school is filled with hope and Mocha Club has helped provide many opportunities for the students. During our time there we will get to hear the students stories, spend time in their classrooms and give them a break in their long days to play games. Some of the students walk 1-2 hours to school each way and many only eat the one meal provided for them at school. The simple of act of listening and playing is going to make a huge impact on their lives.

The third ministry we spend time is the orphans in Kitui. Kitui is a small village about 3 hours outside Nairobi. The orphans have all lost both of their parents. We will spend several days in the village eating, playing, and sharing stories with each other. These orphans want you to hold their hand and spend time with them.
